This is how the project works:
First, teachers ask their students to keep track of everything they use in a 24-hour period; everything they eat, everything they wear, and ALL personal care products they use. The teachers have the students bring these lists back to the classroom where they can do a compare and contrast discussion. Following this, the class creates a master list of "What a human being needs to get through one day of life". Once this is done, the items on the list should be collected however the class sees fit...and packets should be made up containing one of each item. This is then donated, and the students can tell themselves that they helped ONE person in need succeed at getting through ONE day of life. For shelters and other programs, the nature of the project allows them to get a variety of items which they need. Finally, for students and teachers, it is instructive to learn just what we all take for granted each day - you will be surprised at how long the lists are!
Additionally, many schools have added additional items: toys, phone cards, and bus passes are all very helpful if you wish to add any of these items to your collection.
For example, in the first few years of school assemblies over 300,000 people saw SR perform and over 300,000 people-in-need were helped to succeed at getting through a day of life.
